Frequently asked questions
What happens after you order, what you can still change, and everything else people ask us. Prices and delivery shown for United States.
Hero & characters
Can I check the cast and every page before the book is printed?
Yes, all of it, though the order matters. Before you pay you see the cover. The cast and story outline arrive a few minutes after you pay, and the finished pages arrive before the book goes to print.
That makes two check-ins. At the first, fix a face or a plot beat, then approve. At the second, redraw a page, fix a single panel or change the words, then start the printer.
Each check-in has a 24-hour window, with a nudge at 12 hours. Stop my timer pauses the clock if you need longer. If a timer runs out, I carry on with things as they stand, and after the second one that means the book goes to print.
How do I get the hero to look more like the real person?
Start with the photo, because it's all I have to draw from. A single sharp face in good light, looking at the camera, with nobody else in the shot. If the cover looks off, swap the photo and the cover is redrawn from the new face.
On a cover you like, Improve resemblance redraws it with a stronger lock on the face. Each cover gets one go at it.
After you pay, the cast check-in lets you point at any character and say what's off. Character changes are shared across the cast: 2 per character.
Which photo should I upload?
A close-up, in focus, in good light, looking at the camera. Natural light and an uncluttered background help, and a selfie works if the face fills the frame.
Sunglasses, low hats, heavy filters and tiny blurry files make me guess, and my guesses get wild. When you upload, I check the photo and tell you if a better one would help.
A group photo is fine: you tap who is who, and I cut out each face.
Each person in the story gets one photo, and their face on every page is drawn from it, so send your best one.
Can other people and pets be in the comic?
Yes. Mention them in your answers or add them in the cast step. People, dogs, cats and other animals all count.
Once you've seen your cover you can give each one a photo. Without a photo, I draw them from your description. You get a proper look at every one of them in the cast check-in after you pay.
Can I swap the hero's photo later?
Yes, any time before you pay. Go back to the photo step, pick a new one, and the cover is drawn again from the new face.
After you pay, the cover is finished, so a new photo only changes how the hero is drawn on the inside pages. If the inside and the front start to drift apart, the cast check-in has a fix: Make it look like my main character redraws the cover to match your hero's character sheet.
Can I change a character after it's drawn?
Yes, at the first check-in. A few minutes after you pay I email you the cast, drawn. On any character, hit Change this, say what's off (hair, age, nose, species) or upload a better photo, and I take another pass at them. Character changes are shared across the cast: 2 per character.
Names are meant to be final, so check spelling before you pay. If a typo slips through anyway, you can rename a character everywhere for free at this check-in, and it doesn't use up your changes. For the hero's name on the cover, message the stable hands in support.
Once you approve the cast and the story outline, they're locked.
What if a character is wrong: gender, age or skin tone?
It can be fixed. Before you pay, a better photo usually does it. Go for a closer shot in good light with the face turned to the camera, then draw the cover again.
After you pay, the inside pages don't exist yet. Open the cast check-in, tap Change this on that character and describe the problem plainly ("he has a gray beard and he's much older"). Character changes are shared across the cast: 2 per character.
If the character still isn't right, write to us and a person takes over. Nobody wants a book starring the wrong cousin.
Story & cover
How many covers can I try before paying?
You can draw up to 3 different covers: the first one, plus two more with Regenerate. On each cover you also get one Improve resemblance, and across all your covers you get 5 tweaks, where you ask for one small change and everything else stays put.
The limits are there because every cover costs real drawing time, and the horse has to eat. Earlier covers stay on the shelf, so you can go back to one you liked better. The cover you select is the one that goes on the book.
When you reach the limit, go back through the covers you've made and choose the best one.
Can I choose the art style and the occasion?
Yes, both. Choose American Superhero, 3D Cartoon (the default) or Retro Japanese, and every page follows it. Seasonal styles show up when their season does.
The occasion you pick (birthday, Christmas, anniversary, graduation or just because) works its way into the plot, so a birthday comic reads differently from a graduation one.
How long can my comic be?
16, 24, 32 or 40 pages. The classic is 24. It's the default, and it's where free shipping starts. Longer books have room for bigger adventures and cost a bit more: 16 pages is $54.99, 24 pages $64.99, 32 pages $72.99 and 40 pages $78.99.
If you're unsure, go with 24. It's long enough for a proper adventure and short enough that everyone finishes it.
Can I write a message on the back cover?
Yes. The back cover carries a personal note of up to 30 words, with To and From lines above it. You write it on the cover page, flip the cover to see it in place, and you can still edit it at the page check-in.
Stuck for words? Tap an example and make it yours.
Can I change the story?
Yes, before the pages exist. While you're choosing, you can tweak any story idea or ask for fresh ones. After you pay, the first check-in shows the outline one beat at a time: change a single beat, or ask for the whole thing to be funnier, kinder or more heroic. You can change the story outline 3 times.
After you approve, the outline is locked and every page is drawn from it.
Can I redraw a page or change the words in a speech bubble?
Yes. The page check-in has three tools.
Redraw this page draws the whole page again from your note. Fix just one panel redraws only that panel and leaves the rest alone. Both use up a redraw. You can redraw up to half the pages (50% of the page count, rounded up); word changes are free.
Change the words is free and unlimited. Tap any bubble or caption and type the new line, and I re-letter that one box. The artwork isn't touched, so no redraw is spent.
The story is wrong now that the pages are drawn. What can I do?
A joke that misses or a line that's off is a Change the words fix. If the story as a whole isn't the one you ordered, use Report the story at the page check-in. Each report is read by a person.
We offer 90% of the comic price back, and the book is still printed, since the pages already exist. The person reading your report decides what fits.
How long does it take to draw?
The cover takes a couple of minutes. Close the tab if you like: your comic is saved, and I email you the moment the cover is ready.
After you pay, your cast and story outline arrive within minutes. Drawing all the pages takes a few hours. I'll email you when each stage is ready, so you can get on with your day.
Is my comic saved if I leave? What if I lose it?
Your crazy comic saves itself after every click. Come back on the same device, open the link in the email we sent you, or sign in, and everything is as you left it.
Drafts without an account are kept for 30 days. If you gave us your email, you get a heads-up before one is deleted.
If you were signed in, My Comics is where it will be waiting. If it isn't there, ask the Horse, and the stable hands will dig through the hay.
Pricing, shipping & delivery
What does a comic cost?
The price depends on the page count. For United States: 16 pages $54.99, 24 pages $64.99, 32 pages $72.99, 40 pages $78.99.
A second copy of the same comic is half price, 3 or 4 copies cost double the single price, and 5 or more are half price each.
Shipping to United States is $6.99, and it's free on orders of $60.00 or more, which any comic of 24 pages or more clears. The total, shipping included, is on screen before you pay.
Can I order a second comic for someone else?
Yes. Tap Add another book in your cart and make a second comic. It's half price, and it can have a different hero, style and page count.
Handy when two people both insist on being the hero.
Authentic or Premium?
Both cost the same and tell the same story, on the same smooth coated paper. The difference is the cover. Authentic has a soft matte cover, like the comics your grandparents kept in a shoebox. Premium has a bright gloss cover that catches the light, and it's the one that feels like a gift.
Premium is the default if you can't decide.
Which countries do you ship to, and how long does delivery take?
We ship to the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom, and nowhere else for now. Choose your country from the picker at the top of the page and the site shows your prices and shipping. If you live somewhere else, leave your email in the picker and we'll tell you when that changes.
Standard delivery to United States takes 10–13 business days after you approve your pages.
What does shipping cost, and is there express?
Shipping to United States is $6.99, and it's free on orders of $60.00 or more, so any comic of 24 pages or more ships free. The exact figure for your address is on screen before you pay.
Express is offered at checkout where the carrier supports it, with its price and arrival dates shown next to standard.
Order & payment
What happens once I've paid?
Two chances to look and fix things, then the printer.
A few minutes after you pay, an email arrives with a link to your cast and story outline. Fix a face or a plot beat, then approve. Until you approve, you can still cancel for 100% back.
When every page is drawn, a second email arrives. Redraw a page, fix a panel, change the words, then start the printer.
Each check-in has a 24-hour window, a nudge at 12 hours and a Stop my timer button. Then the printer takes over, binds the book and ships it, and you get a tracking link by email.
What happens when I approve the cast and the story?
Approving locks both. The characters and the story outline stop changing, and I start drawing the pages from them. If a character still bothers you, hold off and message us first.
It also moves the refund line. Until you approve, you can cancel for 100% back. After that the pages are being drawn, and a refund is 90% of the comic price.
You have 24 hours. Stop my timer pauses the clock, and if it runs out without a reply I go ahead with what's there.
What happens when I start the printer?
Start the Printer is the last stop before the printer. Once you confirm, your book reaches the printer within 24 hours, and after that nothing inside it can change. The only thing you can still fix is the delivery address, until the book ships.
Before you send it you tick a box to confirm you've looked through every page. Stop my timer pauses the clock if you want more time. If the timer runs out, the book is sent without you.
Is paying safe, and what can I pay with?
Payment runs through Stripe, one of the big payment processors. Your card details go straight to them and never touch our servers. You can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Link, and checkout shows what's on offer in your country.
You pay once, at checkout, and the total you confirm is the total you're charged.
How do I track my order?
Sign in and open My Comics. A four-step bar shows where you are: Ordered, In Production, Shipped, Delivered. When the book ships you get a tracking link by email, and it shows up in My Comics too.
If the book hasn't arrived by the date we gave you, message the stable hands and we'll chase the carrier. Ask the Horse also has a Where is my order button that shows the estimate.
Can I get my money back?
It depends on where your comic is in the process.
Until you approve the cast and story: 100% back. You can cancel yourself with a button, no waiting for us.
After the pages are drawn, before Start the Printer: 90% of the comic price back, and the book is still printed. Use Report the story at the page check-in.
After Start the Printer: the book is locked. You can change the delivery address until it ships.
After delivery: report damage or a print defect within 30 days and we reprint the book for free or refund you. A change of heart once the book is in your hands isn't refundable. The two check-ins before printing are your window for that.
Questions go to the stable hands at support@crazyhorsecomics.com.
What can I change after I've paid?
The order is fixed once you pay. The comic isn't.
Right after you pay, the cast check-in lets you change characters and the story outline, and you can still cancel for a full refund until you approve. Then the page check-in lets you redraw pages, fix panels and change the words.
Once you hit Start the Printer, it's locked. The only thing left to change is the delivery address, and only until the book ships. Do that from your order page or through Ask the Horse. To move it to another country, message the stable hands.
Account & technical
An email never arrived. Where is it?
Look in spam and promotions first. Our mail likes to wander.
If nothing arrives after a few minutes, open Ask the Horse and pick I didn't get my review link to have it sent again, or email support@crazyhorsecomics.com and include the email address you used and what you were doing.
How does sign-in work, and what if it fails?
Sign-in is your email plus a 6-digit code. Type your email, wait for the code, type the code. No password involved.
If no code shows up within a minute, look through spam and promotions, then request a new one. Codes expire after a few minutes, so use the newest. For anything else, email support@crazyhorsecomics.com.
Can I make a comic without an account?
Yes. You can build the whole comic, cover included, and pay as a guest. You do give us your email along the way, so we can send you a link to resume it.
Signing in with your email and a 6-digit code is how you open My Comics and see your comics on any device.
How do I get my photos and data deleted?
We use your photos only to make and deliver your comic. Drafts that never become an order are deleted after 30 days, and the photos of an order are deleted 12 months after delivery.
To have it gone sooner, sign in and choose Delete my data in your account, pick Delete my data in Ask the Horse, or write to support@crazyhorsecomics.com using the email address on your account. Within 30 days we remove your photos and comics and anonymize your order records. The Data deletion page has the details.
My photo won't upload. Why?
Usually it's one of three things. The file: JPEG, PNG and iPhone photos all work. The app: inside Instagram or Facebook the built-in browser can block photo picking, so open the page in Safari or Chrome instead. The page: if it's stuck, reload it, and your comic is still there.
If none of that works, tell the stable hands which phone and browser you're using.
The product itself
Is there a digital version or PDF?
No. What you order is the printed book, with no digital copy or PDF. The closest thing is the page check-in, where each finished page is shown to you before anything is printed.
What does the finished book look like?
It's a proper comic book: 6.625 x 10.25 inches, the size of the comics on the shelf at any comic shop, full color, held together by staples down the spine, with your hero starring on the front. Pick Authentic for a soft matte cover, or Premium for a bright gloss one. Put it next to the classics and it won't look out of place, except the star is someone you actually know.
What's inside the book?
Every page is built from what you told me. The hero stars on each one, your cast pops up where the story needs them, and the plot is as wild as your answers allow, drawn in the style you chose. Expect panels, speech bubbles, sound effects and a back cover with your personal note.
You see all of it before it prints.
Is it okay to make one for a child?
The age you pick for the hero sets the tone of the whole comic. Heroes under 18 get clean language, and adult heroes can take jokes that grew up a little.
The service itself isn't meant for children under 13, so an adult places the order whoever the hero is. And you look through the whole book before it's printed.
Can it be delivered straight to the gift recipient?
Yes. Put the recipient's address in at checkout and the book goes straight to their door. Our emails only go to you, which helps keep the surprise. The personal note on the back cover does the gift-card job.
Gift wrap isn't a thing here yet, so tape and a bow are on you.
What if my book arrives damaged or misprinted?
Tell us within 30 days of delivery. If it's damaged or misprinted, we reprint it for free or refund you, whichever fits the problem. Open Ask the Horse and pick My book arrived damaged. A photo of the problem helps us sort it quickly.
Can the comic be in another language?
Not yet. For now comics are written in English only. Your hero can have any name and come from anywhere, though.
Didn't find it? Email support@crazyhorsecomics.com.
